World Rowing Coastal Championships & Beach Sprint Finals in Genoa: everything you need to know

In September, Genoa will be the stage for the World Rowing Coastal Championships & Beach Sprint Finals, the world championship of coastal rowing. By staying at “Le Stanze del Piccadilly,” you’ll be just a few minutes by bus from the competition venue while enjoying the historic center of Genoa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in all its splendor.

This prestigious event will take place at the San Nazaro baths along Corso Italia, from September 6th to 15th, 2024. It is part of the rich calendar of events for Genoa 2024, designated as the European Capital of Sport.

The competitions

During this double world event, two coastal rowing disciplines will be contested: endurance and beach sprint. Endurance is the most important international competition for clubs, while beach sprint will feature one crew per nation. This discipline will make its Olympic debut in Los Angeles 2028.

Coastal Rowing Endurance

Coastal rowing endurance requires athletes to have excellent nautical skills, a refined strategy, and great physical endurance over a course that varies from 4 to 6 km.

Beach Sprint

The beach sprint, on the other hand, is a newer and more spectacular discipline. Athletes must sprint on the beach, reach their boats, complete a slalom between buoys, then return to shore and finish with another sprint.

Schedule and location

The event will be held at the San Nazaro baths along Corso Italia. From September 6th to 15th, 2024, the first weekend will be dedicated to the coastal rowing endurance discipline, while the second weekend will see national crews competing in the Beach Sprint Finals. This will be the second time Italy hosts the event, following last year’s edition in Barletta, Puglia.
